Oak logs are really wonderful to use in a log burner, but you've got to know how to use them!
Often people find them hard to light, or very smoky to start with, and while these characteristics are frustrating, they're actually what make oak such a wonderful firewood if you get it right.
So we thought we'd show you how to use oak logs in a log burner - with both a video guide and a written step by step.
Video guide - how to use oak logs in a log burner
The step by step
The video's less than two minutes long, but if you're a wordsmith, you can follow the step by step guide below!
- Light a fire using Ready to Burn logs - ideally an easy to light species such as ash or beech. We light our log burner from the top down - you can learn how that works here.
- Top the fire up with additional logs - we're looking to build a good bed of embers.
- When the flame has died down on your logs, open your log burner and knock the logs down into a nice bed of embers - they should be red hot and cover the base of your log burner.
- Add a kiln dried oak log on to the base of hot embers and close the door of your log burner.
- Sit back and watch it catch - you've got a lovely long-burning oak log to enjoy.
- I personally like to mix oak with species such as ash, giving me a nice balance between long burn time and a nice hot flame.
